The Downside to Dry January Nobody is Talking About

We get it, Dry January is a fun trend, something to hashtag in your socials. There are health benefits of taking an alcohol sabbatical – especially avoiding alcohol made from questionable ingredients – and for some people, it’s just what they need. But when we tried it, we found a significant downside to our health that nobody talks about.

It might be funny hearing this from a couple who make alcohol, but we have taken our fair share of breaks from drinking for various reasons. With free and easy access to alcohol, especially ours that has no hangover consequence, it has been tempting to consume more drinks than we would normally. At various times, we have taken a month off, choosing our zero proof cocktails and kombucha over our session mead. And if you need to cut back, we applaud you for doing what you need for your body.

But doing Dry January because everybody else is doing it? Not a good reason.

Because here’s the thing that nobody is talking about: Dry January is lonely AF. And in a world where loneliness is becoming an epidemic, this is a problem. For anyone who struggles with seasonal depression, getting out of the habit of being with friends is even worse for your emotional health. It’s already hard enough to leave the house when it’s dark and 10 degrees out, don’t let dry January keep you from being social. Do you know the single most important factor in longevity in a person’s life? Strong social connections otherwise known as FRIENDS. (If you’re a fellow science nerd, you’ve probably heard of the many studies that show this, and the Harvard Study of Adult Development is a goodie).

So if you’re doing dry January because YOU are choosing to for your own reasons, awesome! Just don’t let yourself become a hermit. Introverts – we love you and we are you – we’re talking to you too. Whatever your previous level of social activity was before the holidays, keep getting together with friends, for your health! We have several zero-proof beverages for you to enjoy at the Hive.

And if you’re looking for a way to drink BETTER, well, our session mead is just the thing for you.
