Apricity means the warmth of the sun on a winter’s day, and we enjoyed that last weekend! While sunshine in the winter is harder to find, we seek warmth elsewhere. Cozy spaces with blankets, candles, and the flicker of a fireplace all seem to draw us closer.
Ayla here. Personally, winter is difficult for me. Cloudy days are the worst, as I struggle with the winter blues, aka Seasonal Affective Disorder, like many people in cold climates. And while I’m the first to seek a cup of tea, a good book, and a dog on my lap, I’m learning that the warmth of being with others lasts longer.
Even though this season has me preferring time to myself and wanting to retreat from time with friends, I’ve found that leaning into time with friends actually makes me happier for a longer period of time. Something about laughing so hard my eyes leak resets my neurotransmitters, giving me that serotonin and dopamine hit I desperately need to feel like myself and not an angry troll.
I thought about this last night as I enjoyed a can of Apricity in the kitchen – other cultures tend to value community over individualism, while the USA seems to be founded on the myth that the individual matters more than the group. Maybe, in seeking the hidden dopamine high of buying new things, what our brains are seeking is community.
So as winter descends upon us, let’s remember what truly makes us feel good: a good belly laugh with a friend, a game night where new words are invented and time spent with people who make you happy. At the Hive, we’re here for all of it and love to be the space where you meet up with friends.
See you soon!
